More than 397 groups have endorsed Senator Jeff Merkley's and Representative Alan Lowenthal's #BreakFreeFromPlastic Pollution Act as the most important set of policy solutions needed to tackle the plastic pollution crisis. Why is this legislation so important? Our world is drowning in plastic, and the U.S. produces the most plastic waste per capita of any country. Plastic is toxic. 144 chemicals or chemical groups known to be hazardous to human health are actively used in toxic plastics. Plastic fuels climate change. 99% of plastic is created from fossil fuels, & if plastic production grows as currently planned, by 2030 these emissions could reach the equivalent of 295 new 500-megawatt coal-fired power plants. Plastic is an environmental justice issue. Petrochemical companies disproportionately harm people of color & low-income communities by producing & disposing of plastic waste in their neighborhoods. Plastic pollutions harms or kills thousands of marine mammals & sea turtles in U.S. waters, 88% of which are listed as endangered or threatened. ♻️ Our recycling system is broken. Only 8% of plastic waste in the United States is sorted for recycling. Tell your representatives to support this historic bill today: http://bit.ly/3lp31sR

We know "recycling" plastic isn't a solution—it's a toxic transfer of pollutants that only enables the fossil fuel and plastic industries to keep polluting. More than 16,000 chemicals are found in plastics, most of these under- or un-regulated, of which 4,000+ are already known as hazardous, and are polluting the planet and our bodies. We applaud these scientists for speaking the truth about plastic and its toxic impacts at the #PlasticsTreaty negotiations happening this week in Ottawa. To end plastic pollution, we must end plastic production. #PlasticPollutes #BreakFreeFromPlastic
🔎 Here at INC-4, our scientists have heard a few curious claims within the ongoing discussions. So, we reviewed the data to fact-check them. 🧪 Let's look at three claims surrounding an important topic: Chemicals in plastics. ❌ Claim: “Chemicals in plastics are safe for human health and already sufficiently regulated under other MEAs.” ✅ Fact: There are over 16,000 different chemicals in plastics (plastic chemicals). 4,200 of them are of concern because they are hazardous to human or environmental health, and 10,000 have just not been properly tested. Only 6% of plastic chemicals are already regulated under existing Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). ➡️ PlastChem State of the Science on Plastic Chemicals report: https://lnkd.in/e8CAjkQX ❌ Claim: “Recycled and circular plastics are perfectly safe, and the chemicals in them are not a problem.” ✅ Fact: Not only do recycled plastics contain many of the same chemicals of concern as virgin plastics with harm to human and environmental health, but the recycling process can introduce additional contaminants and create more unknowns about material safety. This includes non-intentionally added substances (NIAS). ➡️ Review study detecting hazardous chemicals in recycled plastics including PET: https://lnkd.in/ebtJnPFc ➡️ Study on contamination of recycled plastic cooking utensils: https://lnkd.in/eJvDy5ht ❌ Claim: “There is no bisphenol A (BPA) in food packaging.” ✅ Fact: Bisphenol A is still widely used and detected around the world in many packaged foods including in most aluminum beverage cans. Did you know there is a plastic lining inside of beverage cans? ☝️ BPA is legally recognized as toxic for human reproduction and as an endocrine disruptor. The EU found its consumers have dietary exposure to BPA at levels 100 to 1000 times higher than what its food safety authority (EFSA) considers safe. ➡️ EU Hazard classification of BPA: https://lnkd.in/eGUmwNPQ ➡️ European Food Safety Authority's scientific opinion: https://lnkd.in/dy3z3tug ➡️ Review study summarizing the detections of BPA in food packaging: https://lnkd.in/ek5Gwa6x 📄 See our short policy brief on transitioning to a safe and sustainable circular economy for plastics ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eVyTc3Ww 📚 Explore our other policy briefs and resources ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eMvvq7iA 📱 Use our virtual help desk to ask a question or get in touch with a scientist ➡️ https://lnkd.in/eMvvq7iA

The fourth round of Plastics Treaty talks begin today! Officials cannot ignore the fact that PLASTIC POISONS PEOPLE—for the sake of our health and the well-being of our planet. A strong Global Plastics Treaty that caps plastic production is essential to protect ALL OF US— especially those living near plastics and petrochemical facilities. We’re calling on world leaders to prioritize PEOPLE not profits, NOW.
